Sandforce uses a lot of tricks to get good performance, but they’re all negated when it’s fed completely random data, as in the case of Filevault.

As AnandTech has reported, most of the 128GB SSDs in the Macbook Airs are from Toshiba which perform bad with random and already compressed data. So you had to go for the 256GB Model in case you plan on using FileVault for example.

With the 13 rMBP it seems as if Apple only uses Samsung SSDs. However, these are just observations by AnandTech – nothing official.
