Podcast #21: TJ Luoma

2012-01-16 by Podcast. 0 comments

This is the twenty-first episode of the Ask Different Podcast. Your hosts this week are Kyle Cronin, Jason Salaz, and Nathan Greenstein. We also have a special guest today: Ask Different user and TUAW editor TJ Luoma!

  • We’ve wanted to have TJ on the show for some time now, but this week was perfect because of an upcoming contest on Ask Different with support from TUAW. We kicked things off with a flood of new users from TUAW, thanks to TJ’s recommendation.

The iOS Challenge

by Lauren Gundrum. 0 comments

You may have seen iPhone 4S Week on Ask Different a few weeks ago. The iOS Challenge is a larger version of that, with slightly different rules and even more awesome prizes.

To enter, ask questions related to iOS (Apple’s operating system for mobile devices). Anything tagged iOS is eligible for this contest, but make sure you add other tags as well!
Prizes:
The people who ask (1) the most viewed question and (2) the question with the highest score (votes) will receive either a 16GB iPod nano (6th Generation) or Apple accessories of comparable value (your choice).
The Rules
  • The contest is open to both new and current Stack Exchange and Ask Different users.
  • Everyone is eligible to participate regardless of geographic location. If you live in an area of the world where it is too difficult for us to ship you your prize, we’ll figure something else out on a case by case basis.
  • The only metrics we’re using to determine winners are the number of page views and votes your questions get. So ask as many good questions as you can, and share them using whatever means you see fit. Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google Plus, whatever!
  • There will be separate (and equal!) prizes for The Unofficial Apple Weblog readers who are participating in this contest. See this post on TUAW for more eligibility details. Remember, if you heard about us from our friends at TUAW, include in your Stack Exchange profile that you’re a TUAW reader.
Dates: The contest began Monday, January 16th at 10 am and ended on Friday, January 27th at 11:59 pm (EST). Only questions that were asked within that time period counted toward the contest. Congratulations to the following people for winning the iOS Challenge!

Podcast #20: Ask Different Best Practices

2012-01-10 by Podcast. 2 comments

This is the twentieth episode of the Ask Different Podcast. Your hosts this week are Kyle Cronin, Jason Salaz, and Nathan Greenstein.

This week we take a detour off the beaten path, and talk exclusively about best practices on Ask Different, and Stack Exchange in general.

Stack Exchange is a Question & Answer site. It is not a Wiki, Forum, Blog, or content aggregator like Reddit or Digg, but it takes many good ideas from these types of sites. For a long time Stack Exchange consisted of what we call the “Big 3” Sites, Stack Overflow, Server Fault, and Super User, but over the past 2 years it has expanded into a network of 31 unique topics and growing. All of these sites follow the same basic principles, but differ in their content and scope.
